A top tourist attraction on the Venetian island of Burano in the lagoon of Venice is the Lace Museum. Lace has been handcrafted on the island for several centuries. Lace is richly decorated scarves or blankets made of fabric and yarn.

Today this craft is hardly practiced. In the centre of the island of Burano, however, you will find an interesting museum on the subject of lace and its history in Venice. In the same building is also the Lace School of Burano. In the school you can watch older ladies embroidering lace during a visit to the museum.

In Italian the lace museum is called "Museo del Merletto", in the tourist language English "Lace Museum". In the different rooms of the museum there is detailed information about the exhibits in Italian, English and German.

Our tip: Buy tickets for waterbuses beforehand

It is not always easy to buy tickets abroad. You don't know where to buy tickets, foreign ticket machines are difficult to use, there are language problems, queues, etc.

The 1, 2 or 3 day valid tickets for the waterbuses (ferries) in Venice are needed by almost every tourist. These tickets can now be bought on this english website.

The tickets for the bus from Venice airport to the city are available on this page in English language.

Location of the Burano Museum

The lace museum is in the middle of the island and can hardly be missed. The famous church Chiesa San Martino with the leaning tower of Burano is directly opposite. From the water bus station you go straight through the island. The distances on Burano (island size only 0,2 kmē) are not big, one walks from the jetty of the water buses approximately 10 minutes to the museum.

The exhibition is at the marker, opposite is the famous church. The ferries dock in the north of the island.

The different rooms of the exhibition

Room 1. is dedicated to the peaks of the 16th century, the great period of peaks in Europe. In the 16th century many books about lace and their patterns were published in Italy and other countries. The works of art made of fabric and granite were very modern, especially in the upper classes. Venice (Burano) was at that time a very important centre of this craft in Europe.

Room 2: Here you can see mainly Burano lace from the 18th century. Another century in which lace in Europe was used very much in fashion.

Room 3: The 20th century. Especially after the 2nd World War more and more cheap lace were imported from Asia in Europe. In the 80s and 90s it was recognized that the tradition of lace in Burano can only survive if it is publicly promoted. The craft finally became a historical cultural asset.

Room 4: For many visitors the most interesting room in the Museum of Burano. In the former top school you can watch three to four women at work. It's easy to understand how laborious it is to make even a small lace blanket. One of the ladies already needs several months for a small cloth.

Opening hours 2024 Museo del Merletto Burano

In summer: from April to October from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
